Life in rural India is tough for children, but things are particularly hard for girls.

 

Over 200 million women in India live below the poverty line. In fact 46% of girls in India are undernourished.  Families are so poor that marrying their daughters young feels like the only option. 75% of women in India are married underage. Some as young as thirteen.

Education is the key to a life of opportunity.

 

A good education changes all of that. It opens up opportunities other than an early marriage and life of domestic servitude. But it benefits the whole community for generations to come. Girls with an education marry later and have healthier children. In fact a child born to a mother who can read is 50% more likely to live beyond the age of five. This benefits the whole community.
